COURSE OVERVIEW

Africa is a continent with multi-ethnic nation groups and diverse cultures that shape the norms (gender, rites of passage, beliefs and values) and practices of the society. To effectively communicate and engage with communities, it’s imperative to understand their cultures, beliefs, gender norms and practices.

This course is designed to equip you with knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values in understanding the diverse African cultures, traditions, and social structures, and how they intersect with health beliefs and practices that impact on rabies and COVID-19 prevention and control. The course briefly introduces the concepts of Culture, One Health, RCCE and their application in the African cultural context.

It offers you with the ability to critically analyze and apply knowledge from various disciplines (public health, veterinary science, environmental science, sociology, etc.) and cultural insights of African people to address health challenges in Africa using a One Health approach and appropriate RCCE interventions.

Gender Equality and social inclusion considerations remain key determinants of effective RCCE and therefore will be intentionally integrated in all the process of design and roll out of all risk communication and community engagement efforts.
